Mathilde Melek An, born in 1989, in Vincennes, France, is a Franco-Turkish artist whose work is imbued with the duality of her roots between France and Turkey. She navigates between these two cultures, establishing her artistic base between Normandy and Istanbul.
In 2012, she earned her DNSEP from the École Supérieure des Arts et Médias de Caen/Cherbourg in France, after participating in the Erasmus program at the University of Mimar Sinan in Istanbul in 2011.
Her artistic journey is marked by solo and group exhibitions on the international art scene, among them Mamut Art Project, Istanbul [2022], Splash, Caen [2021], MArchives Forms, Mexico City [2018], Mavi Melek, Berlin [2016] and A Drop in A Pool in Istanbul, on the sidelines of the 14th Istanbul Biennale [2015].
She has also collaborated with artists and collectives like in Murmuration with the artists of the Mahalla festival in Istanbul, Turkey [2021], and Manhattan... I only could dream of it, with the collective Wasteband, in New York City, USA, [2016].
In tandem with her visual accomplishments, Mathilde Melek An has explored the realm of performance art with projects such as Golddess and Uzun ince bir yoldayim.
She showcased her performances at contemporary art festivals and events such as New Narratives at the Mahalla Festival in Malta [2018], the Örebro Biennale in Sweden [2019], and the Giswil Art International Festival in Switzerland [2022].
Mathilde Melek An has succeeded in crafting a unique artistic language through diverse forms of expression, delving into memory, identity, and multiculturalism with an ability to transcend geographical and cultural frontiers.
